Location and Climate
Ladakh - a land of mountain passes - is the crown of India. It is situated at the northern tip of the Indian Himalayas, the home to many towering Himalayan peaks including Nun Kun (7,077m), Saser Khangri (7,670m), Chamser Kangri (6,620m), Kang Yatse (6,400m) and Stok Kangri (6,125m). That is why Ladakh is called the rooftop of the world.
Ladakh comprises two districts - namely Leh and Kargil. Leh district is divided into administrative four administrative regions - Zhungkhor, Sham valley, Nubra Valley and Chanthang plateau, whereas Kargil has four subdivisions - Kargil, Suru Valley, Zanskar and Dras Valley.
Ladakh ranges from the high-altitude desert of Chang Thang to lush green Indus valleys. The great Himalayan range forming the southern border blocks the heavy Indian monsoon rains. The average rainfall in the central Ladakh region is around 110 mm (4.3 ins) per year, whereas Zankar and the western region has more precipitation. The high passes are usually closed during the winter due to heavy snow, isolating the various valleys from each other and the rest of the world.
In the summer, the daytime temperature in Ladakh rises to a comfortable range in the mid-20s Celsius (75-80 F), but the night-time temperatures can be cool, particularly at the higher altitudes. The summer temperature lies between -3 to 30 degrees Celsius and the winter temperature ranges between -20 to 15 Celsius.
