In fact, Ladakhis have ceremonies and celebrations for all events and occasions. Ceremonies such as the Gonpa’s religious dance, called Chams, attracts thousands of Ladakhi devotees. Monastic and other religious festivals, many of which fall in winter, provide the excuse for convivial gatherings.
Archery and polo are the region’s favourite sports and are mainly played during the summer months. There are various polo matches during the Ladakh festival that usually falls at the end of September to early October. Darts or archery competitions are held in many villages throughout Ladakh.
The Ladakhi Bags-ston, or wedding ceremony, in which people wear colourful traditional dress, features a blend of music and dance, joy and laughter, and lasts for several days. Chang – a brew made out of local barley - is served to guests and relatives along with modern drinks.
